HISTORY OF EDMOND FAHEY FUNERAL HOME

OUR EARLY YEARS

Captain J. M. Tyler came to Bay St. Louis from Pickens, MS to relocate his Mercantile and Undertaking Establishment, and became the founder of this company in 1895. He worked diligently to build his business until his death in 1906. F. J. Banderet Sr. continued Tyler’s work from 1906 until 1910 when E. F. Fahey Sr. began as an apprentice and later as a partner operating as Banderet & Fahey Bros. until 1920.

After graduating from St. Stanislaus and attending Tulane University, E. F. Fahey Sr. established and ran the Fahey Drug Company and the Fahey Undertaking Company until his sudden untimely death in February of 1941 at the age of 47 years old.

FAHEY-WHITFIELD FUNERAL HOME

E.F. Fahey Jr. grew up in the business and continued operations until his sudden demise in 1947 at the age of 29 years old. The family and staff continued operations through 1949. Kenneth R. Whitfield came to Bay St. Louis from Picayune, MS in 1950 and purchased both the Funeral Home and the Insurance Company from the estate of the late E. F. Fahey, Jr. The only child of Barney and Eva Davis Whitfield, Ken and his wife Maurine not only served the people of Hancock County, but they worked with his father in their businesses in Pearl River County as well. It was at this time that the business operated as Fahey-Whitfield Funeral Home at 205 Union Street until approximately 1969 - during this period of operation, it was managed by W.J. LaFontaine and John T. Jacobs.

J.E. LOIACANO JR'S FAMILY'S LEGACY

The current location of Edmond Fahey was originally built as a funeral home in approximately 1951 by J.E. Loiacano Jr.’s maternal Grandfather, Ed Osborne. Mr. Arthur Tomasich, Loiacano Jr.’s great uncle, was an undertaker and embalmer - he moved from New Orleans to operate the new funeral home shortly before its construction was completed. Tomasich began operations with the business but died unexpectedly only one year later.

Upon the death of Tomasich, J.E. Loiacano, Sr. and his family decided to move in and use the facility as a residence. Loiacano Jr. noted that the shed to the north of the funeral home was where W. A. McDonald stored and sold coal for heating purposes, and Loiacano’s father leased out the garage portion of the facility of the west side of the main building to an auto dealer to store vehicle inventory for about four years. Later, Princess Fahey (Edmond III’s mother) negotiated for the purchase of the property and buildings which brought it all under the control of the Fahey Family.

A NEW BEGINNING

Edmond Fahey III graduated from St. Stanislaus and Tulane University, and after having worked in the travel business for a number of years decided to follow his father and grandfather’s footsteps into the funeral home business. Edmond decided to begin utilizing the location at 110 Necaise Avenue for its original purpose, and when word got out about this venture, several long-time funeral professionals became determined to join forces with Edmond Fahey. Harold Stiglett, W.J. “Coco” LaFontaine, and John T. Jacobs were all seasoned professionals in the funeral industry - two of whom had been managers for the previous owners, as mentioned earlier. Unfortunately, Mr. Jacob’s unexpected passing was the first service at Edmond Fahey’s new location which began operations in January of 1976. On September 28, 1988, Edmond established the Gulf Coast Memorial Cemetery and built the Mausoleum shortly after. Edmond Fahey III operated on Necaise Avenue for 37 years until his passing in March of 2013. Jeanne Sampognaro, Fahey’s long-time confidant and accountant, assumed the reins of the business for the following eight years. Sampognaro graciously selected and entrusted Bradford-O’Keefe and the O’Keefe Family to continue the operations of this multi-generational, community-driven establishment beginning November 10th, 2021.
