Whitner Lee Church, a resident of Pass Christian, Mississippi, passed away on March 25, 2025 at the age of 86.
Born on July 9, 1938, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Whitner led a life filled with adventure, laughter, and an undeniable zest for living. His early years were spent in the Baltimore, Maryland area where he played lacrosse and attended St. Paul's School for Boys. He continued his education at Colgate University in upstate New York, where he earned a lacrosse scholarship. His passion for the sport was evident from his high school years and remained a cherished part of his life.
Following his education, Whitner served in the U.S. Army, demonstrating his dedication and commitment to his country. After completing his service, Whitner spent the majority of his professional life as a stockbroker in New Orleans.
Beyond his career, Whitner was known for his fun-loving spirit and infectious sense of humor. He embraced life with a "joie de vivre" that endeared him to all who knew him. Besides his family, sailing was one of his greatest passions—he not only loved being on the water but also excelled in the sport, winning sailing awards across different classes. Whether competing or simply enjoying time on the open sea, sailing brought him immense joy and fulfillment.
Whitner is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Skrmetta; his daughter, Lisa Church Baldwin; his son, Michael Whitner Church (Anne); and his cherished grandchildren, Moe Joseph Church, Nicole Jane Baldwin, and Parker David Baldwin. He was predeceased by his parents, Randolph and Eunice Butler Church; his brother, Randolph Butler Church; and his sister, Elizabeth Church Marquez.
Whitner's legacy is one of laughter, adventure, and an unwavering love for family and friends. His memory will continue to bring warmth and joy to those who had the privilege of knowing him.
While there will be a private graveside service, everyone is welcome to join in a celebration of life, which will be held on May 3, 2025, from 11:00am – 1:00pm at the Bay Waveland Yacht Club in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
