Mrs. Veola Johnson Armstrong age 81, passed on Saturday, November 27, 2021 in her home of Diamondhead, MS.
Veola was born on January 4, 1940 to the late Rev. Willie Thomas Johnson and Henrietta Lewis-Johnson of Greenwood, MS. The family relocated to Gary.
After graduating from Froebel High School in Gary, IN, Veola went on to earn a nursing degree from Saint Mary Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, IL and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Illinois.
Her professional career spanned over thirty years in dedicated service to Cook County Hospital. In 1993, Veola retired from Cook County Hospital as the Assistant Divisional Nursing Director / OB-Gynecology Nursing. After retirement, Veola returned to Biloxi, MS to continue in service to children and adolescents, enjoying a rewarding second career at Jeff Davis Elementary School.
Veola was a fervent caretaker, devoted lover of cats, an enthusiastic chef and an avid reader. She enjoyed charitable giving and supporting a range of community initiatives.
Veola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bailous, and three brothers, David, Vernon and Jerome.
She is survived by two sisters, Lorine Johnson and Velma Jamison both of Diamondhead, MS; three brothers, Billy Johnson (Elizabeth) and Tommy Johnson (Lillian) both of Gary, IN, and Johnny Johnson (Debbie) of Charlotte, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
Please join us in celebrating the life of Veola Johnson-Armstrong on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis. The family will receive guests from noon until 1:00 pm with a Homegoing Celebration at 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Hancock Monument Company, Gardens of Memory.
