Ruth "Bette" Braun Martin, nicknamed "Gypsy Queen Mother" referring to her penchant for constant travel, passed away Monday, July 31, 2023 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. She had lost her fight with ovarian cancer. Her dear friends, Linda Jablonowski and Mary Seferlis were by her side when she passed.
Bette attended several universities during her academic career, but got her degree in English and Drama from the University of Miami where she met her future husband, Ralph Martin, a jazz pianist. Their love of art and travel was a binding force throughout their 65 years of marriage.
Bette worked as an Associate Editor for Kandar Publications while in NYC in the 1960's and Ralph worked through Musicians Union 802 as a pianist. Through the years they opted to live in NY, Florida, Curacao, St. Croix, St. Martin, Exuma, Capri, Majorca, Saratoga Springs, Grand Gorge, Ramrod Key, Pass Christian, St. Augustine, Long Beach, and lastly Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. They were joined at the hip in their love of art and remained married until Ralph's death.
It must also be mentioned that Bette wrote two books she published under pen names. "A Rage to Love" about Maria Callas and a very funny "North to Toronto" based upon a private investigator she knew. Her love of languages and literature were her passion until the very end.
She is survived by her daughter, Raphaelle Martin Carlesimo, and her two grandchildren, Adrianna and Sean Carlesimo.
Edmond Fahey Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Ruth "Bette" Martin.
