Patricia Ann Haas Young was born January 25, 1929, in New Orleans, LA. Patricia, known to family and friends as Patsy or Pat, was the fifth child of S.G. Frank and Roselynn Haas. She grew up in New Orleans, attended Newcomb College. She passed away peacefully on Friday, May 3, 2024 at the home she shared with her husband of 72 years, Herbert F. Young, known also as Bert. Pat is survived by her son, Herbert F. Young, Jr and his wife Leigh Ann Stegall of Pelham, AL; and three daughters, Patricia Buras and husband Frank of Mandeville, LA, Mary Ellen Lowrey and husband David of Lakewood, CO, and Ann Gardner and husband Dan of Hoover, AL. Also, sixteen beloved grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pat was predeceased by her father and mother; sister, Roselynn Haas; brother, S.G. Frank Haas, Jr.; sister, Jane Haas Vincent; sister, Rosemary Haas Williams; and sister, Gloria Haas.
Pat was a lifelong Roman Catholic and served many years as a teacher in the RCIA program at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church since moving to Bay Saint Louis, MS in 1991. Hers was a life of service as a librarian at Tulane University and later for several energy companies in Houston, TX, working with production records and contracts.
Pat was devoted to her family. Beginning in the Haas family home in uptown New Orleans, she helped care for her younger sister Gloria who had special needs. For a great part of Pat’s life, she cared for others. As a young woman and young mother, Pat visited frequently her beloved great-aunt Bertha “Bubbs” Janssen during the years of nursing home residence. Pat nursed her aged father during his last years of poor health.
Pat worked at Tulane University's Howard-Tilton Library in Government Documents for many years while raising her family and caring for her elderly mother and special needs sister. During Pat's retirement years in BSL, she cared for her special needs brother-in-law Melvin Young.
In her early 50’s, her husband Bert accepted employment as a petroleum landman with the Atlantic Richfield Oil Co. in Houston, Texas. There they discovered the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Pat wrote a book about her many wonderful adventures in the Renewal.
During her retirement years in Bay St. Louis, before Katrina, she took communion to shut-ins of the parish and frequently helped them with their housekeeping needs.
Pat began sewing as a girl but stepped up her skills when her children were young. Over the decades she produced beautifully tailored clothing for family and friends. Pat's children remember fondly the pretty or handsome play clothes, the carnival costumes, prom formals, wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, curtains, and crocheted blankets.
Special thanks to Dr. James Crittenden and his office staff and the staff of Gentiva Hospice, and all who cared for Pat. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church or to your favorite charity.
