Margaret Patricia Horne Scafidi, 78, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in Diamondhead, MS surrounded by her husband of 58 years Terry Scafidi, her brother, Michael Horne, and his wife Kay Horne.
Having suffered from bone cancer recently, Margaret passed away comfortably and was ready to meet her maker. The daughter of a college professor of English, Margaret was born in New Orleans, baptized at Holy Name of Jesus Church, and attended Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School. Her family relocated to Bay St. Louis in 1958, where Margaret graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1964. Margaret earned her bachelor's degree in English at Loyola University in New Orleans in 1967, where her father, Dr. Mark Daniel Horne, taught. She married Terry Scafidi that same year, and the couple moved to Savannah, GA, the next year, for Terry's newfound job. Margaret and Terry settled into Savannah like they were born there, Margaret discovering she was greatly needed as a middle-school teacher in the Catholic School system and ended up teaching there for over 40 years. The Italian community welcomed them, and they enjoyed being members for many years there. Terry's job took him all over the southeastern states, but they remained based in Savannah for over 50 years. The entire Horne family, including sister May and husband Bob Fister's family, and brother Jack and wife Judy's family members of the Scafidi family, brother Sparky and wife Becky, and friends, were constant visitors, being welcomed with delight by Margaret and Terry. When her father died in 1975, Margaret's mother, Isabel Lillian Bouny Horne-known as Little, moved in with the Scafidis in Savannah until her death in 1982. Margaret and Terry were especially close to the Nativity Catholic Church, Blessed Sacrament Church, and the nuns who taught with Margaret. She became a lay member of a local spiritual society and devoted much of her time to sharing prayers with friends and family. During St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Savannah, the Scafidis were seen much involved anywhere there was an event. During Mardi Gras time Margaret had her sixth-grade class at Nativity School dress up in costumes and bring carnival beads to all the classes in the school. Oh. Yes, the Scafidis were certainly open to any sort of praying, and partying, all year long. Both having retired, it was natural to think of the old hometown, and the many relatives living there. So, in 2018 they moved back down to Mississippi, Bay St. Louis to be exact, and recently to Diamondhead, where two of Margaret's sisters and a brother, plus cousins and friends, resided. St. Clare Catholic Church in Waveland and recently Most Holy Trinity in Pass Christian.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Little Horne; maternal grandmother, Isabel Bouny "Tippy"; twin paternal aunts, Sarah and Agnes Horne; and two brothers, John Hynes Horne "Fella" and Mark Daniel Horne, Jr. "Sparky".
She is survived by her wonderful and loving husband, Terry Scafidi of Diamondhead; three sisters, May Horne Fister of Diamondhead, Danielle "JoJo" Horne DesAngles of Kiln, and Dr. Maryanne Horne of The Villages, FL; brother, Michael Horne (Kay) of Diamondhead; seven nieces, Anne Fister Daniels (Dan) of Lawrenceville, GA, Jane Fister McNabb (Alan) of Decatur, GA, Sandra Fister Cika (Jim) of Haverstraw, NY, Ashley Horne Desmond (Rich) of Peachtree Corners, GA, Shani Horne McCloskey (Pat), Joelle Horne Hall (Eric) bother of Clermont, FL, and Candice Horne of Diamondhead; four nephews, James Robert Fister, Jr.(Tabitha) of Snellville, GA, Dr. John Hynes Horne, Jr. (Beth) of New Orleans, LA, Gregory Dean Horne (Dana) of Braselton, GA, and Michael Horne, Jr. of Walker, LA; numerous great-nieces and nephews and longtime, cherished friends in Savannah, Josie and Tim Cooper.
