Herbert Francis “Bert” Young, Sr. was born April 23, 1928, in New Orleans, LA. Herbert, known to family and friends as Bert, was the eldest child of Herbert Adam and Buelah Mequet Young. He grew up in New Orleans, attended Tulane University and graduated from Loyola University School of Law in 1956. He passed away peacefully on January 10th at the Community Living Center of the Biloxi VA Medical Center.
Herbert is survived by his son, Herbert F. Young, Jr and his wife Leigh Ann Stegall of Pelham, AL; and three daughters, Patricia Buras and husband Frank of Mandeville, LA, Mary Ellen Lowrey and husband David of Lakewood, CO, and Ann Gardner and husband Dan of Hoover, AL. Also, sixteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Herbert is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Herbert was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Patricia Ann Haas Young on May 3, 2024. Herbert was also predeceased by his father and mother; brother Melvin Joseph Young of Bay Saint Louis MS and sister, Joyce Young Taylor of New Orleans, LA.
Herbert was a lifelong Roman Catholic and a Knight of Columbus at Our Lady Of the Gulf Catholic Church since moving to Bay Saint Louis, MS in 1991. He and his late wife were also members of the Lay Carmelites on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for many years.
Herbert served in the United States Navy from 16 October 1942 until his honorable discharge on 18 April 1946. Herbert’s father died in February 1942 when he was 13 years old. Early in the following school year Herbert decided he wanted to join the Navy. However, the Navy recruiter told him that he needed to be 17 years old and have a parent sign for him. So he located his mother's typewriter and ink eradicator. He got to work on his baptismal certificate, removing all information except the signature of the priest. He filled in the certificate with a “revised” birthdate of April 23, 1925, which indicated he was 17 years old. The revised certificate allowed him to enlist in the Navy. After basic training, he was assigned to an anti-submarine warfare base in Trinidad, where he ultimately wound up typing orders in the combat intelligence office. He continued as a yeoman in Key West FL later in the war.
Because of his service in the Navy during the war, Herbert qualified for the G.I. bill which allowed him to complete his education through law school graduation.
Herbert was employed in the oil and gas industry as a lawyer/petroleum landman until he was 78 years old. He began work with Richardson and Bass in 1951 and worked as an independent petroleum landman for several companies based in both New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX.
For fun and exercise Herbert loved to ride his bicycle around New Orleans and Bay St. Louis. He loved company and conversation and greatly appreciated the friendship of neighbors and family wherever he lived.
Special thanks to the medical and support staff at the Biloxi VA Medical Center and especially to the team at the Community Living Center’s Mississippi and Niagara units.
