Herbert Wilson McLendon, affectionately known as "Mac," peacefully passed away on March 23, 2024, at the age of 88, in Bay Saint Louis, MS. He also called Hazlehurst home, where he touched the lives of many.
Herbert was involved in his community and served in the American Legion, VFW, and honorably in the U.S. Navy where he served and completed two tours in the Vietnam war. He lived a life rich in service and camaraderie.
His passions were as varied as they were deep. Herbert found solace in the rhythm of the ocean while shrimping, nurtured life through his green thumb in the garden, and cherished moments shared with his family, but especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He found joy in turkey hunting, cruising in his beloved red Ford F150, experimenting in the kitchen, and sharing laughter with those around him. He will forever be remembered for his lively story-telling. Herbert was a master of invention, always tinkering and creating, and his homemade liquor was a testament to his ingenuity. There was nothing Herbert could not do or fix.
Herbert was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Hood, daughter, Pamela Ann Dawson, brothers, Ken, Richard, Bill, and William McLendon, and parents William and Rosie McLendon.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jerry Bea Stewart McLendon, whom he referred to as “Bea Bea”; his loving daughters, Kimberly McLendon and Wendy McLendon Boyd; his cherished grandchildren, Joe Parker (Hillary), Dewey and Kennedy McCardle, Lauren Hood, and his six adoring great-grandchildren.
Herbert’s absence leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, generosity, and resilience will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
A celebration of Herbert’s life will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 Visitation from 9-11 and service to follow at 11 at Stringer Funeral Home in Hazlehurst, MS.
May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
