Bertrand Olavides Sy, MD

Bertrand Olavides Sy, MD, 78, of Diamondhead, Mississippi, was born January 14, 1946, to Praxedes and Sabina Sy. He passed away January 3, 2025, surrounded by his family.

In 1974 Bertrand moved from the Philippines to Brooklyn, New York where he completed his pediatric residency, becoming a board-certified pediatrician. He married Bernadette Tan in 1975, and together, in 1980, they moved to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where they established a pediatric practice that faithfully and compassionately served patients for 32 years. During many of those years Dr. Sy was the sole pediatrician in the area where he and Bernadette became beloved members of the Bay community.

Bertrand was a long time, dedicated member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, and in recent years he also attended Most Holy Trinity Church in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Bertrand enjoyed spending time and celebrating special occasions with his loving family. Traveling to the Holy Land, Fatima, Lourdes, Rome, amongst many others brought opportunities that Bertrand treasured for both worship and historical appreciation. Bertrand loved to sing, and he often enjoyed watching musicals, both in movies and on stage. Boating in the Bay became a favorite activity while living at their home on the water.

Following Bertrand’s retirement, former patients and their families loved encountering their doctor and Bernadette out and about in the Bay area. Dr. Sy’s heart-warming smile and genuine caring continued to be sources of encouragement and delight throughout this life.

Bertrand is survived by his beloved wife, Bernadette Sy; sons, Dr. Bernard Sy (Christine) of Lebanon, Tennessee, and Brian Sy (fiancée Amanda Weaver); daughters, Bernice Sy, of Atlanta, Georgia; and Beverly Owen (Phillip) of Diamondhead, Mississippi; three grandsons, Noah Sy, Benjamin Sy, and Parker Owen; and four granddaughters, Olivia Sy, Gabriella Sy, Brooklyn Owen, and Brynn Owen.

Bertrand was preceded in death by his parents.

Gathering in thanksgiving for the life of Bertrand Sy, funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11th, at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, in Bay St. Louis. Family visitation will be11:00 am-11:30 am, and public visitation 11:30 am-1:00 pm, with Mass at 1:00 pm. Burial follows at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis, MS, or Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Pass Christian, MS.
