Albert Alphonse Asher

November 15, 1935 — January 16, 2025

Bay Saint Louis, MS

Albert Alphonse Asher, 89, of Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, departed this life on January 16, 2025, at the Gulf Coast VA Medical Center in Biloxi.

Albert Alphonse Asher was born on November 15, 1935, at the Hancock County home of his parents, Curtis A. Asher and Luella Hose Asher. The home was in the same neighborhood where he would live his entire life.

While growing up, he worked with his father as a carpenter. He also worked with the Hancock County Tax Assessor’s Office.

Albert graduated Bay St. Louis High School then went to a business school in Jackson, MS. Upon completion, he received his draft notice from Uncle Sam. He decided to join the United States Air Force. Albert went to boot camp in Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas then served in South Carolina where he was a drill instructor. He ultimately went to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska where he was a duty sergeant. He truly enjoyed living in Alaska. He loved the snow and often spoke about hiking the beautiful mountains and glaciers.

While in Alaska, he married Clara Lee Ketchum Asher on October 1, 1956. He also had his first son, Robbie K. Asher.

Upon completing his duty with the Air Force, Albert left Alaska and returned to Hancock County. He got a job with Coast Electric Power Association. While with Coast Electric, Hurricane Camille hit Mississippi and Albert played an integral part in acquiring the material and supplies to rebuild the company’s electric grid and returning power to its members.

While working at Coast Electric, Albert also operated a nursery and garden center. He also had his second son, Roger Dale Asher.

In 1972, Albert left Coast Electric and opened a grocery and hardware store in the same neighborhood where he was born. During this time, he became an important part of the neighborhood. He opened early in the morning and many employees at Port Bienville would come by for breakfast and lunch. Albert knew almost everyone and usually addressed people by their first name.

When Albert retired, he started selling daylilies and working yard sales with his father and mother. Many Saturday mornings they were up early to be the first ones at area yard sales.

Albert was predeceased by his father, Curtis, his mother, Luella, wife, Clara Lee and son, Dale

He is survived by his son, Robbie, whose wife is Nadine J. Asher, his –daughter-in-law, Karen Asher, three granddaughters, Victoria Melton, whose husband is Jason, Melanie Kormondy, whose husband is Douglas, and Stacie Carr, whose husband is Hank. Albert also has four great-grandchildren, Dana and Mallory Ritter, Lilly Kormondy, and Albert Carr.

Throughout his life, Albert was a dedicated, loving, and caring husband and father.

Albert’s family wants to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Gulf Coast VA Medical Center and particularly the staff at the Community Living Center for the care and attention they gave him.
